Thanksgiving 2020: Restaurants with take-out and delivery around Tacoma, Pierce County

Welp. This won’t be the Thanksgiving we want with all the pandemic concerns about group gatherings, but let me help you try and make the most of Thanksgiving 2020 anyway. 

With many families skipping the big gatherings, diners are likely looking for a place to get take-out or delivery.

Here’s my list of resources for a great plate of food, no matter what your holiday looks like. I’ve also got a list of bakeries where you can pre-order pies, a seafood company with a Thanksgiving seafood pack and barbecue restaurants that will smoke your turkey for you. Read to the end of the story for beer pairing advice from Tacoma’s favorite beer geek, Ron Swarner.

In case you had not heard, dine-in service is suspended again in restaurants. The new restrictions were announced Nov. 15. Some restaurants previously had planned to have dine-in service, but all dine-in service is on pause from Nov. 18 to Dec. 14. Read more about the new dining restrictions here. Take-out and delivery is still permitted.

BEN DEW’S CLUBHOUSE GRILL
This longtime Tacoma restaurant features the greatest hits of American diner eats and will have take-out Thanksgiving plates that are ready to eat.

BLACK BEAR DINER PUYALLUP
This South Hill diner with a classic American menu will have ready-to-eat, takeout plated Thanksgiving meals. The restaurant will serve its regular menu until 11 a.m. and then it will switch over to a limited holiday menu.
Prices: Start at $17.99 for a single plated meal to $69.99 for a family prime rib dinner.
Reheat at home: No, dinners will be ready to eat.

CITRON EUROPEAN BISTRO
My favorite Alsatian restaurant (and the only one of its kind in the region) is featuring its regular menu, plus a take-out Thanksgiving meal.
Menu details: Take-out turkey dinner with turkey, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and winter vegetables. The regular menu of French-German-Swiss entrees also will be available. The schnitzel is everything you want it to be.

How about a drive to the mountain to pick up dinner? Ashford’s Copper Creek Inn is offering a take-out meal. It’s also home to delicious blackberry pie.

WHERE TO BUY THANKSGIVING PIE AND DESSERTS 


ANGLEA’S
This Midland diner has some of the best pressure-fried chicken and jojo potatoes in the county, but did you also know it’s home to some of the best apple pie, too? The lattice-top pie comes with a crunchy coating of sugar and thick-cut apples that are substantial in texture and flavor. Remember Peggy Waldherr and her cinnamon rolls from Freighthouse Square? Her son Joe Waldherr bakes those cinnamon rolls at Anglea’s and you can order those in advance, as well. For Thanksgiving, they’ll have pies and cinnamon rolls available for advance ordering and pickup on Wednesday Nov. 25 until 8 p.m. Pie choices include apple, blackberry, cherry, strawberry-rhubarb, banana cream, chocolate cream, coconut cream, chocolate peanut butter, lemon cream. Whole pies are $14.50 each. Cinnamon rolls are $4.99 for regular or raisin or $5.50 for caramel pecan. The rolls are big and one will feed two people.

BEER PAIRING ADVICE FROM PEAKS AND PINTS OWNER RON SWARNER

Here’s some sage advice from beer geek and Peaks and Pints owner Ron Swarner. His Proctor neighborhood beer emporium is THE SPOT to get all your Thanksgiving beer needs covered.

BERLINER WEISSE: “First things first — you. You’ll be up at dawn baking pies and peeling potatoes. Start the day with something lighter, but flavorful — something that won’t dull your taste buds: Berliner weisse. It really is the champagne of beers, and what we like to drink when we’re cooking and celebrating with family. Berliner weisses are highly carbonated and have great tartness and acidity to complement that game-time cheese and charcuterie plate, too. And true to style, Berliner weisses are very low alcohol/sessionable — a great way to start off the day.”

PASSIONFRUIT SOUR RECOMMENDATION: “For a memorable one, try Breakside Brewery’s Passionfruit Sour, a Great American Beer Festival silver medal winning beer brewed as a traditional German Berliner weisse, and then the Oregon brewery adds a unique, tropical twist. It uses lactic acid producing bacteria to produce a beer that is light in body, extremely refreshing, and mouth puckeringly tart. The addition of passionfruit in its lagering tanks gives this beer an inviting stonefruit aroma. The low alcohol, 4% ABV, allows you to drink it throughout the day and still avoid getting in fruitless arguments with crotchety Uncle Lewis.”

BEER PAIRING ADVICE: “Pairing beer for Thanksgiving dinner can be tricky. For starters, a turkey has both light and dark meat. There’s also usually a sweet cranberry sauce and a savory stuffing along with a veritable smorgasbord of sides, rendering the heaviness of a porter too much, and snuffing out any flavor from light session ale. The best beer to drink six feet away from weird Cousin Eddie needs to be neither too bold nor timid, letting the food shine through even as the beers assert themselves. My go-to Thanksgiving beer is The Bruery Autumn Maple Belgian Brown Ale out of Southern California. I’m talking Belgian yeast, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, maple syrup and 17 pounds of yams per barrel. Its rich malt and spice are more than enough to stand up to the classic holiday dishes.”
