Want a sweet nugget of Easter normalcy? Tacoma’s Johnson Candy Co. to the rescue

Easter candy

For some Tacomans, Easter isn’t Easter without a coconut egg or chocolate bunny from Tacoma’s Johnson Candy Company. Good news: They’re open now for curbside pickup, or mail orders.

Call 253-272-8504 between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to order. They’ll work out pickup or mailing details when you place your order.

The legendary, longtime Hilltop chocolate and confection maker had closed its doors in March amid the state’s Stay Home Stay Healthy directive. But the Johnson family kept making candy and shipped the chocolate via the postal service. Curbside service is something they added to keep customers safe and to follow safe social distancing practices.

“I think we are all pretty grateful to have something to keep us busy,” said Bill Johnson. “Like many small businesses, we wouldn’t survive an extended shutdown.”

The old fashioned candy shop that makes everything from seafoam to handmade truffles is embracing the 21st century. Soon, they’ll have a website for ordering and they’re taking orders via their Facebook page.

“Because we have so much more phone traffic than usual we hope people will be patient. If they message us on social media we will call them back,” said Johnson.

Added Johnson, “We’ve been around a long time, and people like chocolate, especially during hard times. It’s nice being able to provide a little bit of comfort. A lot of our regular customers have been really happy that we’re still open in some capacity.”

Indeed. Customers can still get the candy store’s legendary coconut eggs or whip eggs. They have chocolate bunnies in three sizes and made with milk, dark or white chocolate. “We also are making $25 baskets with a bunny, our caramels, a coconut nest, and other goodies,” said Johnson.

Miguel Hernandez of Mexican-European bakery Pasteles Finos del Angel in South Tacoma tells me he’s fully stocked with Easter treats, plus vegan baked goods and his usual European pastries. If his individually portioned tiramisu is available, get it. He’s also been baking bread, so pick up a loaf.5102 S. Erin Powell of Girl Loves Dessert is making her famous macarons for pickup on Saturday, but you need to order soon. Visit her social media for ordering information. Powell is best known for her fanciful macarons, but also has a wide pastry repertoire. She’s the former pastry chef at Pacific Grill among other Tacoma restaurant institutions. https://www.facebook.com/girllovescakedesserts

Did you know you can get a full Easter brunch or dinner for takeout? Farm 12 has dinner for 2 or 4. Asado has a take-out brunch pack that you can assemble at home. Did I mention that one restaurant is offering take-out mimosas? Check the story out here.
