Alfred’s Cafe in Tacoma has a new owner, here’s what’s up

Alfred's Tacoma

Alfred’s Cafe in Tacoma’s Dome District has a new owner, but locals and regulars will recognize him. Longtime Alfred’s Cafe bartender Scott Wright is the new operator of the popular breakfast spot that previously was owned by Brett and Linda Armstrong for more than a decade. Wright took over in January.

In 2018, the Armstrongs opened Manny’s Place in Proctor, which they still own.

Wright has had the same career trajectory as Brett Armstrong, who worked for 17 years as a bartender before taking on restaurant ownership.

“I have worked at Alfred’s for 15 years,” explained Wright.

Will the new owner of Alfred’s Cafe make the restaurant his own? Yes, and no. He doesn’t plan to change the name or the concept, he said. The “vibe” of Alfred’s, he said, will remain intact. He will, however, make small menu changes.

“I’m bringing the menu back to what it was when I first started at Alfred’s 15 years ago, in baby steps though.” He mentioned the spicy Benedict and a crab omelet.

Alfred’s Cafe is known for its classic breakfast menu and has developed a reputation as a go-to spot for the chorizo gravy, the Monte Cristo sandwich and Benedicts. The lunch and dinner menu features burgers, salads and a handful of American diner classics, such as meatloaf, top sirloin, fish and chips and pasta. It’s a popular destination before Tacoma Dome events.

The dining room offers a sense-of-place like few others in Tacoma. The entry reads like a retro diner, but enter the dining space and diners will find a room layered with wood tones and mirrors. The footprint follows the quirky sensibility of a historic building. There are nooks and crannies and an elaborately carved wooden back bar. Note for accessibility: Bar seating has an emphasis on high-top tables. However, plenty of accessible seating can be found in the dining room.
