Bonney Lake has lost its tavern

Gary Wofford has closed his Bonney Lake Tavern, or BLT as the locals know it.

The 23-year-old restaurant and bar closed this week because the restaurant’s owner could not come to favorable lease terms with the landlord. The restaurant operated at 18212 SR Hwy 410 E., Bonney Lake.

“It is with very heavy hearts that we write this morning, after 23 years of owning the BLT, we are closing the doors. Unfortunately, we could not come to terms with the building’s owner to renew our lease.  We would like to thank all of our employees over the years for all of their support and service,” read the announcement.

Wofford, who formerly worked at the University of Washington as a Huskies football coach, has expanded and shrunk his restaurant footprint in the past in Bonney Lake.

In 2011, he opened Midtown Grill, a restaurant he took over from Zato Grill owner Maximo Ansola III. Wofford closed Midtown Grill in 2015.

Midtown, like BLT, was a sports-themed restaurant with a farflung menu of burgers, sandwiches, steaks, chops and seafood.

BLT was much more casually styled with a focus on sports viewing – the sports game of the moment was always playing – and serving reasonably priced pitchers of beer. It was known as a great place to watch a Huskies game, naturally.

Owner Cory Cannell has expanded his pizza empire from Tacoma to Spanaway. Today, he opened Puget Sound Pizza, a second location, in the former home of Gateway Cottage. Read more here.
