Crab King Cajun seafood opening where Tacoma Outback Steakhouse recently closed

Here’s what’s moving into the old Outback Steakhouse location in Tacoma: Crab King Cajun Boil and Bar. The restaurant will serve Cajun seafood boil with a full-service experience that includes table service, cocktails and a lengthy menu of boiled and fried seafood.

“We’ve been here working on the building for the last few months,” said manager Jay Zheng. If all goes as planned, they’ll have the doors open sometime in the next month. 

“It’s Cajun seafood,” said Zheng of the menu. “We plan to serve shrimp – head-on or headless – snow crab, lobster, Dungeness crab, King crab, black and green mussels,” said Zheng. He said Dungeness crab will be a seasonal offering. The others he plans to have available regularly. 

As with most other Cajun seafood boil restaurants – including Dragon’s Crawfish in Tacoma’s Lincoln District, Cravin’ Crawfish on Tacoma Mall Boulevard and Boiling Crawfish in Puyallup’s South Hill – diners order from a list of seasonings and flavorings that range from mild to super spicy. The seafood is boiled in those seasonings and shuttled to the table in a giant bowl with hunks of corn on the cob and potatoes. Diners shell and eat the seafood using picks, crab crackers and sometimes scissors (if they’re offered). It is a get-your-hands-dirty experience, so don’t wear anything requiring dry cleaning. 

The former Outback Steakhouse in Tacoma will be home to Crab King.

THE OPENING MENU

Zheng said the restaurant plans to serve its seafood in shallow bowls for easier eating. “It’s easier to reach into,” said Zheng. Of the spice levels, he noted, “You can have any spice level from mild to super spicy. We have top level of spice and mild ingredients, hot and super hot. Any favorites they choose, they’ll have four levels to choose from.”

Seafood will be ordered by the pound and the menu will list larger seafood combinations with add-ons such as sausage. 

Raw oysters and fried seafood will complete the menu. “We’ll have fried catfish. We’re going to do some wings as well. French fries, sweet potato fries, a lot of different things, plus chicken tenders,” said Zheng.

Kids will be welcomed. “We will have kids meals. The kids meals will be most likely fish and chicken. We’ll have boosters,” said Zheng. 

The restaurant will serve lunch and dinner daily with a single menu offered for both meals.

The restaurant will offer table service and has applied for a liquor permit for beer, wine and cocktails. The dining room seats about 200, but Zheng said they likely won’t serve at that capacity until the restaurant is full on staffing.
