Krab Kingz opening in Parkland with a menu of Southern seafood, boiled and fried

Share

Krab Kingz plans a November opening for the Southern-style seafood restaurant with a menu of boiled and fried seafood. Their location is in Parkland at 11814 Pacific Ave. S. That’s a few blocks away from Pacific Lutheran University and across the street from Warthog BBQ Pit.

“We basically take a Louisiana style and South Florida style and we combine the two,” said owner Michael Mango who is opening the restaurant with wife Karissa Mango, who grew up in University Place. Mango is from Georgia.

What makes seafood boil south Florida style? “Eggs,” said Mango. In addition to the usual corn-on-the-cob and boiled potatoes included in a seafood boil mix, Krab Kingz throws in an egg. “It’s served hard boiled and warm like the seafood,” explained Mango. The spices in the boil seep into the egg. Just peel-and-eat.

FAST-CASUAL STYLE OF SERVICE

The format of the restaurant is different from boil restaurants in the area, which include Dragon’s Crawfish in Tacoma’s Lincoln District, Cravin’ Crawfish on Tacoma Mall Boulevard and Boiling Crawfish in Puyallup’s South Hill. While those restaurants offer table service, Krab Kingz is a fast-casual style restaurant with counter ordering.

Diners select the seafood they want to order by-the-pound or in a combination, they get a number and find a seat. From there, the seafood arrives steamy hot from being boiled in a variety of spices. It’s typically served in a shallow bowl and is ready to peel, crack and eat. Spicing ranges from mild to extreme heat with different flavorings also available to order, plus garlic-tinged butter.

Seafood at boil restaurants is subject to market prices and availability. The menu can shrink and expand depending on what’s in season or available. Prices also will fluctuate with availability and the season.

On the core menu, Mango expects to be able to regularly offer “crawfish, crab and shrimp. We’ll always have those. Lobster will be an offering,” he said. They serve lobster boiled or fried.

As for the rest of the fried seafood menu, expect fried catfish, fried shrimp, fries and chicken strips. Also find spicy sausage and other fixings diners expect at a seafood boil restaurant.

The restaurant will be family friendly with a dedicated kids menu and booster seats. The restaurant seats 36 and is decked out in Seahawks-themed bling. Expect to be blown away by the custom furniture made from salvaged timber, Mango said.

MORE THAN 60 RESTAURANTS

Krab Kingz restaurants are far flung across the country with more than 60 locations from Nebraska to Texas. This is the first Krab Kingz location in Washington. Mango said they thought of opening one here because Karissa grew up in University Place and knows the area well.

When they open, they plan to offer lunch and dinner. At lunch, they hope to appeal to the JBLM crowd. Mango, a veteran himself, said he plans to offer sandwiches and other fast-service items for those seeking quick lunches.
