Steamer’s Seafood Cafe at Tacoma’s Titlow Beach CLOSING
Tacoma’s Steamer’s Seafood Cafe has a sense-of-place like no other and over the last 15 years, I’ve written more than once that Steamer’s Seafood Cafe at Titlow Beach is the most affordable view restaurant in Tacoma. And now this will be the last summer you’ll get to eat there.
“Summer 2020 will be the final summer season as the landlord is not renewing the lease,” the press release read, which I’ve attached here.
The order-at-the-counter cafe, with stunning water views and a serve-yourself tartar sauce pump, opened at Titlow Beach in 1991. It was an outpost of the Pier 56 restaurant in Seattle with the same name that was founded in 1975. A Kirkland Steamer’s opened in 2010. Tacoma is (was) the final Steamer’s Seafood Cafe left.
The restaurant was at the top of my list for fish and chips on a lengthy tour of casual fish-and-chips spots I completed in 2016. That was just a few months after Steamer’s reopened after a six-month closure due to a dining room flood.
My 2016 tour included order-at-the-counter spots such as Paya Fish and Chips at Freighthouse Square, Northern Fish on the Ruston Waterfront and The Daily Catch window at Point Ruston. While Northern Fish and The Daily Catch earned high marks for beer battered cod, I always ranked Steamer’s Seafood Cafe high for that delicious crunchy panko-style breading on the cod. Steamer’s breading was in the same category of fried cod alongside Paya Fish and Chips. If you like crunch, Steamer’s and Paya are the go-to places.
But you know what’s even more fabulous? Steamer’s serves its fried cod with panko, but my exhaustive tour where I ate alllll of the fish found that Steamer’s serves its halibut with a beer batter. Best of both worlds under one roof, my friends when you can get panko and beer batter at the same spot. But you’ll have to check for yourself to see if it’s still on the menu; seafood menus fluctuate greatly and halibut is one of those luxury items now that can be too expensive for a casual spot to serve.
And now you have until January 2021 to enjoy that crunch, the yeasty beer-battered halibut and creamy chowder.
